Octopus Energy CEO Greg Jackson Unveils Mercury: A New Interoperability Standard at New Energy Summit 2024
The announcement, made at the leading global event on energy transition, introduces Mercury as a transformative technology standard that connects consumer devices to smart grids to create more efficient and flexible energy ecosystems.
Mercury expands on the capabilities of existing frameworks like Matter, which enables seamless communication between smart devices, while Mercury goes one step further with smart grid functionality. When Mercury enabled devices are paired with smart energy platforms such as Heatio, technology owners not only benefit from optimisation against time of use tariffs but Heatio can also facilitate participation in Virtual Power Plants (VPPs).
At the summit, Jackson highlighted the potential for Mercury to drive global adoption of distributed energy resources (DERs), such as energy storage, electric vehicles & heat pumps by making it easier for them to integrate with the energy grid. The system is also closely linked with KrakenFlex, Octopus Energy’s cloud platform, which already manages over 40 GW of renewable energy assets globally. By leveraging Mercury, KrakenFlex aims to enhance real-time energy balancing and provide smarter, more flexible grid management.
"Mercury is more than just a smart home standard; it’s the foundation for a fully decentralised energy grid. By integrating with platforms like Heatio and KrakenFlex, consumers will be able to control their energy future while contributing to a cleaner, more flexible grid," said Simon Roberts, Heatio CEO.
This integration enables a shift toward global virtual power plants, connecting millions of homes and businesses to a distributed energy network. The combined capabilities of Mercury, Heatio, and KrakenFlex promise to deliver significant impacts, driving both energy saving for consumers and decarbonisation for the grid.
